Nice to meet you. I’m Britta Hernalsteen, the founder and lead creative of The Matter of Design.
I have spent the last 15 years at some of Chicago’s best and brightest digital and branding agencies. Serving large corporations, like GE and Hyatt Hotels, to smaller organizations, like pharmaceutical startup Evolve Biologics and nonprofit Peterson Garden Project, across a range of industries such as healthcare, technology, manufacturing, finance, insurance, hospitality, professional services, law, pharmaceuticals, commercial real estate, transportation, publications, and nonprofits.
I created MOD because I wanted to have a more direct relationship with my clients. To be able to offer creative ideation grounded in business strategy in a collaborative manner. I strive to be a partner to those that hire me, invested in the success of our shared project and your business.
What it’s like to work with me
Some say I bring a keen creative mind paired with a sensitivity for business. I balance the need for compelling, stunning visuals and language with strategic purpose and positioning. A successful project to me is one that exceeds goals and elevates the organization, regardless of how large or small the scope.
In the day to day, I like to focus on what’s next while providing an empathetic experience. I prefer direct, concise communication and I prize organization and process that keeps us all feeling informed, prepared and cohesive. Clients often find I have an open mind for creative, transparent collaboration and a curiosity to uncover the unique and compelling.
The personal side
Outside of running a creative business and delivering for clients, I enjoy getting outside. You might find me kayaking or gardening before work hours. My natural curiosity has taken me around the world, on trips from Japan to India to Copenhagen. However, most days you will find me hanging out in Chicago or Michigan with my partner, Mike, and our two cats, Totoro and Otis.
